Plaque and Tartar Explained

Learn the difference between removable plaque and hardened tartar, plus daily habits that help control both.

Plaque versus tartar

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth helps remove it.

When plaque hardens, it becomes tartar, also called calculus. Tartar cannot be safely brushed away at home; a dental professional needs to remove it.

Regular dental visits matter because a professional can check for gum disease, cavities, and tartar in places you may not see. Seek care sooner for pain, swelling, or bleeding that does not improve.
