How to Brush Your Teeth Properly

Use a gentle angle, small movements, and a simple four-zone routine to clean teeth and gumlines.

A simple two-minute routine

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold the brush at about a 45-degree angle toward the gumline. Move it gently in short strokes, cleaning the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of every tooth.

Divide your mouth into four zones: upper right, upper left, lower right, and lower left. Spend about 30 seconds on each zone. Light pressure is enough; scrubbing harder does not clean better and may irritate gums.

Brush twice daily, and clean your tongue if it feels comfortable. Floss or use another interdental cleaner once daily to reach between teeth, where bristles cannot reach well.

When to ask your dentist

Bleeding, swelling, pain, persistent bad breath, or sensitivity deserves professional advice. A dentist can recommend technique changes or tools for your specific mouth.
